I love to draw, to make lines that both describe what I'm seeing and express what I'm feeling. Usually I find my subject matter by chance. The bridge images came out of the coincidence of a dream and an actual claustrophobic experience driving across the steel truss bridge between Maine and New Hampshire. The animal drawings resulted from the chance discovery of a yard full of Alpine goats. I think when I saw them, I was looking for a way out of the geometry of the bridges.

As for the use of white line, I was inspired by the blackboards which cover the walls at "Figs," a restaurant in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Perhaps many former teachers have an urge to mark on empty blackboards when they see them -- a desire to write out math formulas or history notes. I wanted to draw lines on the ones at "Figs," and when I returned to the studio I still felt like drawing white lines. So I made the animal drawings with chalk and white paint on panels coated with blackboard paint.
